A brilliant engineering college student’s app which shows up the faults in the security systems of banks lands him in trouble.
Review: Campus stories have always been a favourite theme in Malayalam cinema and are also well received by audiences. Sakalakalashala aims
to stand out from the regular campus stories with elements of suspense and action in its second half; and it is not about rivalry between
gangs.
Akbar Salam aka Akku (Niranj Manianpilla) is a very talented, popular engineering student. He is the star at the college fest and gets the
first prize for his college when he develops an app which allows the user to tamper with the security systems of banks. This gives him
plenty of TV coverage, which causes the police to keep an eye on him.
Niranj’s gang of college friends includes Dharmajan Bolgatty, Grigory and Manasa Radhakrishnan, and their fights and jokes make for many
light moments. College principal Kallarakkal Achan (Shammy Thilakan) and Kolathiparambil Achan (Tini Tom) add to the hilarity with their
fights and jabs at each other. Harish Kanaran lightens even the tense moments with his comic turns.
Pashanam Shaji in his role as an SP and Renji Panicker as police chief perform very well. Niranj carries off song and fight sequences ably.
Manasa is pleasing to the eye.
The music score by Aby Tom Cyriac is hummable; the background score also pleasant. The fight sequence by Mafia Sasi, done after a gap, is
nicely executed. Fort Kochi and the nearby places are captured aesthetically, especially in the song sequence.
Sakalakalashala does not have many popular names to boast of, but it is still a fun ride. Niranj is a bit wooden,
especially in the emotional sequences in the second half. The rest of the cast have done justice to their characters.
The length of the movie, which stands at only about 2 hrs 15 minutes is a big plus, because at no point does the film feel like it is
lagging. It keeps you engaged from start to finish.
