Written and directed by Shan Kechery, Kantharam is a movie set in the forest, hence the name. Without much of publicity, Kantharam is the kind of movie that comes and goes silently and deserves every bit of the silent treatment.
Kantharam is the story of a series of murky murders around a getaway home-stay in the middle of the forest. When Sidhu and Swathy, a newly-wed couple, elope to a rather unknown cottage in the middle of the forest, their honeymoon turns into a trap.
Whenever the CG team isn't in play, all the cinematographer's camera gives is some good shots of greenery in action.
Replete with mystery, murder and sleazy sex, Kantharam is a hot mess with an abundance of forest, created on cheap CG, some amateur acting, unnerving lyrics, music and not a tint of logic. Shivaji Guruvayoor, inspite of his talent, is unable to lift Kantharam. Hemanth Menon gets his 'mass' moments and some love duets, but other than that none of the actors do much towards the narrative.
When the lead pair are shown making out at the house of a man they believe died saving them while his body just went missing, it is safe to say that the story, or lack thereof, is a sleaze fest. From the first frame to the last the film fails logic repeatedly, making it next to impossible to take the film seriously.
This is the sort of film a reviewer endures in the hopes of warning its audience against, while there is still time.
