My Story Malayalam DVD Released

Swanky cars, beautiful visuals, a good looking couple gallivanting through quaint towns, and a story that is as old as cinema itself; that's Roshni Dinaker's My Story in a nutshell. The film was much anticipated for a reason, it sees Prithviraj and Parvathy as an on-screen couple after Ennu Ninte Moideen. Both actors look great in the film, but at the end of it all, you are left wondering why they were in it, their parts could have been done by any pretty face and hunk, with minimum acting skills.

Prithviraj is Jay, an aspiring actor, who finds his much awaited big break in a film starring Thara, an established diva. But Thara is not really interested in the film, or her career, or her life even, as she is engaged to a rich man she is repulsed by. She develops a liking for Jay, who fills her life with hope, and the two embark on an adventure together.

What can be said as unique in the film is that it shows a woman falling in love with a man, instead of the other way around as in the usual case, but the freshness ends there. At times it feels like the filmmaker is bent on including every cinematic cliche known to the world - the poor little rich girl bored by her controlling and rich fiance in a suit, the orphan young man who is poor yet fun, her moneyminded father and more, all set against the backdrop of a film shoot, instead of a ship, as in the Titanic. The dramatic dialogues and situations are in stark contrast to the new wave of Malayalam cinema where everything is subtle, and as real as it can be.

Most of the film is set in Lisbon, Portugal, and the colourful visuals of the place and peppy music by Shaan Rahman can be said to be the only saving factors. There are moments of subtlety, especially when the couple talk about how life has treated them, and a few instances of real humour, but these get mostly drowned in the chaos. Parvathy as the sprited yet suppressed diva is more like a dream girl, while Prithviraj seems more comfortable in his mature avatar than as a shy newbie. The film also sees Parvathy in a never before avatar, which is quite interesting. Ganesh Venkitaraman as the fiance does his part well, so does the rest of the characters who are very few in number.
