Sameer Hindi Movie

An edge of the seat thriller with a big pay-off!

STORY: An Engineering student is nabbed by the Anti-Terrorism Squad after his roommate is found to be a terrorist mastermind.

REVIEW: Sameer is a regular student studying to become an engineer in a Hyderabad hostel. After a series of bomb blasts in the city, he is nabbed in an ATS raid by the authorities who are looking for his roommate, the elusive Yasin Darji who is said to be the mastermind behind the blasts. ATS chief Vikram Desai tortures the youngster and breaks him down to use him for the 'greater good'.

On the surface, 'Sameer' is a taut thriller that looks at how the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in India functions when faced with terrorist threats, mainly Islamic extremism. It shows us how knee-jerk reactions in the upper echelons of the security establishment affect the people on the street. Very objectively, it reveals the political machinery in a country which uses institutions of power to their own advantage by altering public perception. The disclaimer at the start of the film lasts for almost a minute where the filmmakers assure us that they are are not making the movie to offend anyone. An hour into the film, you understand just why they had to do that.

Sameer is a proper edge-of-the-seat thriller, albeit with its flaws, but keeps you hooked till the very end with a very strong pay-off. But the best part is the way the filmmaker has minced no words. No political party, religion or institution is let off the hook by director Dakxin Chhara and the result is an edgy, low-budget thriller which is totally worth your while. Performances may be the Achilles' Heel of Sameer, but a strong story and a brave intent make it a good watch. Know those small films which come out of nowhere and compete with the biggies on the strength of their content? This just could be one of them.
