Kasargold starts with a bang and throughout the movie, there are bits that are very interesting, but ultimately, these just serve to show missed opportunities. For the film could have been a banger, but has at least one unexplained issue at a major juncture and several holes that make it miss the mark.
Gold smuggling is the theme of the story, which has a thrilling first hour. Alfie, played by Asif Ali, picks up his girlfriend who has flown in with a batch of smuggled gold, and on their way to hand it over to his boss, his car brushes against another and he gets into a scuffle with the driver, Faisal, played by Sunny Wayne. He was on his way to Thiruvananthapuram to get his wife’s certificate sorted.
Once they go their different ways, Alfie finds that the gold missing from the car. In a panic, he goes to his boss, a Muslim politician, played by Siddique, who directs his gang to find the gold. Now, one of the problems here is, how the gold - valued at about Rs 3 crore - falls into Faisal’s hands. Alfie is tasked with finding Faisal and getting it back.
Going into greater details of the story would mean giving out spoilers, so suffice to say, the smuggled gold and people carrying and following it travel to Mangalore and Goa, and we catch glimpses of desperate smugglers who will risk it all and pull a last job to turn around their fortunes. There are also greedy and unscrupulous politicians, and their goons. While the story has holes, director Mridul Nair, who has also co-written the film with Sajimon Prabhakar, has created strong characterisations and some good moments, showing the collateral damage caused by the 'underbelly' of politicians and bad cops . It feels like a shame that they didn’t go the extra mile to ensure a clean, faultless script.
Asif Ali brings oodles of style, which is what the film demands, apart from playing Alfie with the right mix of hotheadedness and arrogance. It shows his caliber as an actor that he is able give the film its mood. Sunny Wayne brings a vulnerability to Faisal. PP Kunhikrishnan, who played the magistrate in Nna, Thaan Case Kodu, perfectly plays a totally different personality here as a corrupt politician.
Kasargold is engaging with a thrilling story and excellent acting, but you can’t help feeling that it could have been gold, but isn't quite 24 carat.
