Marubhoomiyile Mazha thullikal

A mediocre family tale that's many decades late, which might though work if made into a mega serial. Marubhoomiyile Manjuthullikal is nothing less than that, right from its choice of title. Predictability and deep rooted patriarchy are subtly writ all over the film, from the word go.

A school girl, Puja is distraught due to the numerous issues her family is embroiled in - a deeply-in-debt dad, detached mom who has no mind to help, and a drug addict brother. With the help of a teacher and her uncle, she finds one solution after the other to set things straight.

Not that the intention of the filmmakers seem absurd, just that they don't have a thing new to say. It's all of that 'old wine in the borrowed new bottle' story. The wafer thin plot of the old world tale has zilch novelty to keep the audience glued to the screen for 102 minutes. As compared to the film, its music is better, especially the very first song that sets the backdrop of the story. Probably, if the story was broken down into melodramatic episodes of a mega serial, it might have still worked. One does feel sorry for most of the cast members who might have performed better if guided well by a better script or mature direction.

Those who continue to be the fans of family tales told over and over with no new age sensibilities, or do not mind how mind-numbing a rehashed tale can get, can afford to give this film a try.
