Mathai (Jayaram) is an ex-soldier, who is now working as a security guard. He is friendly with all and quite some time is used initially to establish his nature. He is fondly called “Marconi” as he tunes the radio signals for all in the village.
Remember, this is the kind of movie where songs, both new and old, start playing quite frequently. It is during a song sequence that the focus shifts to finding a girl for Mathai to tie the knot. His age never comes as an issue here as girls much younger to him falls for his charm. Or we are made to believe so.
After the sweeper at the bank where Mathai is a security passes away, a new girl named Anna (Athmeeya) joins in her place. She is a cute girl and wins everyone’s hearts. Mathai loves her but is hesitant to tell her that.
Meanwhile, there is Tamil superstar Vijay Sethupathi who is in Kerala for the promotion of his next Tamil film. He does the promotion mainly at an FM Radio station and there he gives advices to all. He learns about Mathai and Anna during the programme.
The highlight in this film are the delicious frames that are beautifully set. However, this film lacks a credible script and after a while the story just meanders along without any direction.
The story is totally focused on Jayaram and he has made sure to look good in every shot. Athmeeya is fine. But it is disappointing to see the much talented Vijay Sethupathi, who has a huge fan following in Malayalam, choosing a film where he has nothing much to do.
Marconi Mathai is full of sweetness and romance, but the writing lacks depth or strength.
