The film Marina Puratchi, which is based on the three-year-old jallikattu protests, was in the news for a long time as the Censor Board refused to clear the film owing to its controversial content. The film begins with Sukanya (Shruthi Reddy) and Parthasarathy (Naveen) attending an interview for the post of a reporter in a private channel. When the interviewer feels that they do not know much about the history of jallikattu and the protests which took place, he gives them two weeks’ time to learn thoroughly about the bull-taming sport. The rest of the film is their presentation about jallikattu to the interview board.
The kind of research the director did for the film deserves special mention. He has touched upon various factors and anybody who wants to gather basic information about the traditional sport and the protest could watch the film. But all these are presented as a documentary which runs for more than an hour. There are only a handful of characters and no effort has been put to develop their background. This is the kind of work you would want to watch when it gets released on YouTube as it is devoid of the cinematic language.
The director has indulged in personal attacks and has taken a dig at a few organisations, the police department and the government among others. With amateurish performances and artificial staging, the movie, which is heavily dependent on vox pops, is hardly interesting except for the detailed information doled out on jallikattu.
