Soothrakkaran DVD Released

Soothrakkaran begins with the unexpected murder of Balachandran, who jointly runs a milk products export import company with his friends Sreedharan (Lalu Alex) and Prabhakaran (Vijayaraghavan).

Soon after the murder, the movie cuts to Prabhakaran’s house, where the deceased Balachandran’s daughter Ashwathi, from a relationship unknown to his friends, appears.

Now, an orphan, Ashwathi is instantly embraced by Prabhakaran and his wife, who adopt her as their own daughter. His son Sreejith Prabhakaran (Niranj Maniyanpilla Raju) and Sreedharan’s son Govindan (Gokul Suresh) meet the new family member and as expected, both of them are equally smitten by her.

From then on, Sreejith and Govindan are on their pursuit to woo her. While Sreejith is an aspiring counsellor and a loafer, Govindan is the helping hand for his father, and get to steal the scene, with his glasses, mundu-clad avatar and mass scenes, coupled with thumping background music. Varsha Bollamma as Ashwathi is the ideal girl who manages to look picture perfect all the time, and does it all, be it singing or painting. Amid the love triangle, runs the murder mystery, wherein the perpetrator picks on one family member after another, soon as they unravel the truth behind the same.

When the moment of truth arrives, the audience is put through an adventurous ride as to how the villain has been trying to fool everyone around him.

Gokul Suresh’s performance in the movie would remind many of his father’s aura and swag. There are even allusions to Suresh Gopi, through dialogues such as, ‘Itrem pero? idhente achane konde pattu’ and ‘Ini kaashum chodhichu varumbo orma undavanam ee mugham’. He manages to keep his poise, even when he exhibits shades of grey. While Varsha plays the eye candy for the two male characters, nothing more about her or whom she has an inclination for is shown. Niranj Maniyanpilla Raju plays his part, but doesn’t have much to do in the film. The songs, often look forced.

That said, actor Shammi Thilakan is reduced to a mere pawn by the makers to add to the thriller. Padmaraj Ratheesh’s cop performance captures the attention. Also, supporting characters such as Sreejith’s mother and sister in law, actually strike a chord than a few pivotal roles.

Though there are few intriguing incidents in the film that also throw light on a pertinent social issue, Soothrakkaran fails to make an impact as a thriller.
